Yolo County Revived Salvage Inspection and VSSI Requirements
If you are rebuilding a total-loss vehicle in Yolo County, the safety inspection is one part of a larger DMV process. Finishing the mechanical work does not automatically make the vehicle ready for registration.
California requires a Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection certificate for a revived salvage vehicle. The certificate is electronic and comes from a licensed VSSI station after the vehicle passes the required examination.
Where VSSI fits in the DMV process
DMV currently lists several items for revived salvage registration. The exact paperwork depends on the transaction, but the core requirements can include:
- an Application for Title or Registration;
- acceptable proof of vehicle ownership;
- vehicle verification or a CHP inspection when applicable;
- an electronic VSSI certificate;
- registration and other required fees;
- additional items such as smog certification when applicable.
That makes it useful to check the full DMV requirements before spending time moving the vehicle between shops and government offices.
For owners in Woodland, Davis, West Sacramento and elsewhere in Yolo County, VSSI should be scheduled after the necessary repairs have been completed.
VSSI covers more than the old inspection
Some paperwork and older online information still refer to brake and lamp certificates. BAR explains that these certificates are no longer the current requirement. Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection replaced that process.
The current examination includes brakes and lighting, but its scope extends further. Technicians also inspect body structure, steering and suspension, tires and wheels, and safety equipment in the passenger compartment. An onboard diagnostics scan, recall check and road test form part of the procedure.
This difference is central to VSSI vs brake and lamp. A car that would appear fine based on its lamps and braking response can still have another safety defect that prevents it from passing.
What happened to the old $7 and $60–120 figures?
This site’s historical FAQ lists a $7 certificate charge and inspection labor of approximately $60 to $120 under the former brake-and-lamp program.
Neither number should be used as a present-day quote.
BAR says current VSSI prices vary by station.
The cost of repairs also sits outside the inspection fee. If a station finds unsafe tires, a braking defect, unfinished structural work, damaged restraint equipment or another problem, the amount needed to correct it depends on the specific vehicle.
For budgeting purposes, keep inspection charges and repair expenses separate.
Prepare the car before scheduling
It makes little sense to take a vehicle to VSSI while known safety work remains unfinished. BAR advises owners repairing their own total-loss vehicles to complete necessary repairs before the inspection.
Start with defects you can identify without specialized inspection equipment. Confirm that required lamps operate, the windshield has no disqualifying damage, tires are roadworthy and warning lights have been addressed. If the collision affected steering, suspension or structural areas, make sure those repairs were completed according to the manufacturer’s procedures.
Open safety recalls deserve attention too. An unresolved recall is among the reasons BAR lists for an inspection failure.
What if the vehicle does not pass?
The station provides a vehicle safety report that identifies the reasons for failure. The owner then needs to repair or correct those items and schedule another inspection.
The next visit is a complete VSSI. BAR requires the station to inspect all required safety systems again, rather than checking only the part that caused the first failure.
A passing station sends the certificate directly to DMV electronically and gives the owner a safety report for their records.
Finding a current VSSI station in Yolo County
Always verify that the shop is currently licensed for Vehicle Safety Systems Inspections. Use the BAR Auto Shop Locator rather than relying on an old brake-and-lamp license or an outdated business listing.
Ask about the inspection price before booking because fees differ by station. If the vehicle cannot legally or safely be driven yet, also plan how it will reach the facility.
