This site was built around the old California brake-and-lamp process for salvage and revived-salvage vehicles. The Only Fixed Fee on the Old Page<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Program Ended September 27, 2024<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

California replaced the standalone brake and lamp programs with the Vehicle Safety Systems Inspection, or VSSI. The Bureau of Automotive Repair says VSSI inspections began statewide on July 8, 2024, and the old programs ended on September 27, 2024. The new inspection is broader: it covers brakes and lights plus body structure, steering and suspension, tires and wheels, the passenger compartment, and other required checks. Use the current BAR VSSI information<\/a> to understand the present program and find current licensing information. Do not treat this legacy directory as the official BAR locator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Shop Bill Is Bigger Than the Certificate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A certificate is only one line on the bill. If a salvage vehicle needs brake, lighting, wiring, suspension, tire, or structural work before it can pass the current safety inspection, repairs can become the real budget issue. Ask the shop to separate inspection charges from repairs and to explain which items are required for compliance versus optional maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If cash on hand does not cover necessary work, a personal loan or auto-repair loan can be one financing option, but it is a stopgap rather than the plan. Compare APR, fees, repayment term, and total repayment before borrowing. A repair estimate should come first; financing should never be presented as automatic approval or as a reason to authorize work you do not understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only fixed cost the shop has is the cost of the California Brake and Lamp Inspection Certificate which costs only $7, the rest of the cost is labor.
